Managing How You Use wapamembers
Several years ago, an email list called "wapamembers@uwm.edu" was established. The addresses on the list were added when WAPA members contacted the webmaster and requested to have their email address added to the list. While this list offered another means for WAPA members to keep in touch and for the WAPA board to communicate with members, the list was plagued by a large number of incorrect addresses. In addition, the list included less than half of all WAPA members. About a year ago, APA began to make available to chapter presidents the email addresses of members who provided them to APA. In order to improve communication between the board and members, WAPA chose to use the APA supplied list, which was more complete, for the list of members who volunteered their emails for the wapamembers list. As configured at the time, however, this system created difficulties for members. First, for members who wished not to receive email posted to the list, the method of updating the list offered no feasible method for permanently removing members from the list. In addition, because of the enormous increase in SPAM email over the last year, many members were bothered by an increase in nuisance emails. During July 2003, the wapamembers list underwent a subtle but important changes. First, the list was converted into a listserv, which means that members now control when they are subscribed and when they are unsubscribed. In addition, unlike the technology use prior to July 2003, only those who are subscribed to the list may post messages to the list. This change should substantially reduce the amount of SPAM received by list members. Although individuals who are not members of WAPA may subscribe to the list, any individual who abuses the list by posting messages that are inappropriate for its principal users will be banned. Finally, because wapamembers will no longer include all members who have email (and have shared that email address with APA), the WAPA board will maintain a separate mailing list to send critical information to members. The address for that list will not be publicized in order to reduce the likelihood of the address being discovered by spammers. The WAPA board and webmaster hope that these changes better serve members' needs and help to increase the quality of communication among Wisconsin planners. |
