Summer Planning Intern

SUMMARY:  This is a limited term employee (LTE) position for up to 13 consecutive weeks during the summer break term of 2008.  Under direction of the Shawano County Planner, this position is responsible to:  assist the County and the 24 local municipalities participating in the Shawano Area Comprehensive Planning Project with implementation of their adopted comprehensive plans. 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:  Duties may include, but are not limited, to the following:

bulletConduct ordinance research on potential methods to aid implementation of community comprehensive plans.
bulletPrepare a report documenting said research.  The report may include model ordinances that facilitate implementation of local comprehensive plans, educational materials to aid local officials in understanding implementation methodologies, and a timeline indicating percentage of implementation which as occurred within each jurisdiction.
bulletAssist Planning staff with the remainder of the Shawano County Comprehensive Plan public participation activities, including public information sessions to review draft county comprehensive plan.
bulletProvide regular reports on project progress to the County Planner and the Planning, Development and Zoning Committee. 
bulletProvide day-to-day administrative and technical support to staff. 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

bulletCurrently enrolled in an accredited college or university with at least two years of experience towards a degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration, or related field.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE

bulletMust be a self starter who is able to work independently with very little direction.
bulletKnowledge of basic principals and practices of land use planning and techniques used to research, formulate, and implement planning programs. 
bulletAbility to analyze and interpret requirements of local, State and Federal legislation
bulletUse of basic office computer software applications (Windows XP and Microsoft Office products).
bulletAbility to maintain effective positive working relationships with employees, elected officials, and the general public. 
bulletMust be able to maintain a timeline and meet deadlines without exception.
bulletAbility to maintain accurate and complete records and prepare clear and detailed reports.

OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS

bulletPossession of a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.

COMPENSATION

bulletThis position is currently paid at the wage of $12.00 per hour.
