The City of Prairie du Chien is seeking self-motivated, talented candidates
for the position of City Planner/Zoning Administrator. Prairie du
Chien is an historic, dynamic, small community (population 6,000) located
along the Mississippi River in beautiful southwest Wisconsin (www.prairieduchien.org).
The City considers this to be a position of major
importance to our community’s future.
The City Planner carries out responsibilities in community, economic,
transportation, land use, and environmental planning, and facilitates
drafting and updating of the City’s planning documents. He or she also
provides staff support to the City Council, Redevelopment Authority, Plan
Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and Industrial Development Corporation,
as well as other city departments on zoning and planning issues. The Planner
implements and enforces the City Zoning Ordinance, including the Floodplain
Ordinance, and reviews all construction projects to ensure compliance.
Qualified candidates should possess a Bachelor’s Degree in urban planning or
a closely related field and have three (3) years experience in planning or a
related field. Master’s degree preferred. The successful candidate must
possess knowledge of zoning and subdivision rules and regulations, and
possess an extensive understanding of comprehensive planning programs,
processes, and theories. The successful candidate should also have
experience in grant writing, a working knowledge of state and federal
economic development programs and knowledge of Tax Increment Financing (TIF).
Effective oral and written communication skills are essential.
Starting salary is $35,000 to $45,000 depending on qualifications. The
position will remain open until filled, but the first round of applications
