Executive Director
Environmental Design Research Association
EDRA seeks a visionary Executive Director to begin half time in
September 2009.
The Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) is an international,
interdisciplinary organization that includes design professionals, social
scientists, students, educators, and facility managers. The purpose of EDRA
is to advance and disseminate environmental design research to improve
understanding of the interrelationships between people and their built and
natural surroundings, and to help to create environments responsive to human
needs. EDRA seeks visionary leadership to shape and strengthen our
influence on a global audience.
JOB SUMMARY
The Executive Director will serve EDRA as a spokesperson, leader,
ambassador, manager, and board facilitator in a way that ensures financial
stability, generates membership growth, optimizes organizational
performance, ensures a sense of common purpose among members, and generates
recognition for the organization. The Executive Director will create a
cooperative culture to carry out the association's objectives and vision.
He or she will utilize a diverse group of staff, members, volunteers, and
complimentary national and international organizations. The Executive
Director reports directly to the Board of Directors. The Executive Director
is a half time position, with the possibility to expand to full time in the
future.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Collaborate with the Board of Directors on issues of management,
policy and planning.
2. Bring relevant issues to the attention of the Board of Directors
for timely discussion or action, and develop policies and planning
recommendations in collaboration with the Board.
3. Manage staff in support of the organization's objectives; hire
and fire staff.
4. Grow the association's membership by expanding current and new
programs, activities, and services in a manner that is sustainable and
beneficial for EDRA members.
5. Generate a diverse and reliable revenue stream to fund
accelerated growth of the organization. Oversee the development of an
annual budget for approval by the Board.
6. Administer the overall activities of the association including
strategic planning, the annual conference, trips and meetings, activities
undertaken by the membership in support of EDRA's mission, and all Board and
committee activities.
7. Manage the annual conference.
8. Ensure legal integrity of the association.
9. Develop and implement a communications and marketing plan that
strengthens EDRA's position as a global authority on environment design
research. Advocate for domestic and international value, acceptance, and
use of environment design research and broaden the understanding of
environment design research to a worldwide audience.
10. Raise funds to cover 75% of salary after initial one-year period.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
1. Minimum of master's level of education in associated field
2. Leadership, team-building, and interpersonal skills that allow
Board and members to freely interact in setting policies, objectives, and
goals for the association
3. Written and oral communications skills that successfully promote
EDRA's activities, products, and programs; and strong marketing skills that
aggressively build the audience for environment design research
4. Organizational skills that provide strong administration of
ongoing projects and forward planning of future events
5. Diplomacy skills and experience to enhance the image, credibility
and recognition of the association
6. Knowledge of environment-design research and issues related to
research dissemination
7. Business skills in financial administration and accounting, with
the ability to review budget forecasts for accuracy and oversee expenditures
for cost control. Experience as an association executive, including
credentials as a Certified Association Executive, is highly desirable
8. International experience is desirable.
LOCATION
EDRA is an international organization with members primarily located in
North America and a business office in Edmond, Oklahoma. In future years,
EDRA
may explore
opportunities to relocate our Business Office to Washington DC. Location or
ability to relocate to Washington DC is a plus, but is not required.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience.
